Mangrove goby
Elongate, compressed body; head short, depressed, cheeks bulbous; snout blunt; eyes large, towards front, narrow between them; 2 pores behind eye, last one on preopercle, 2 between eyes, 2 between each pair of nostrils; mouth horizontal, large, slightly underneath snout; teeth in fine bands, 3-4 large canines on sides of top jaw, several including a pair of large tusks at front of lower jaws; no gill rakers on upper first gill arch, one triangular raker at the angle of the arch and 3-4 triangular rakers on the lower arch; dorsal fin VI + I, 12 (rarely 11 or 13); I, 13 (rarely 12 or 14) anal rays; 1 more ray on 2nd dorsal fin than anal fin; pelvics fused to form disc; tail fin long and pointed; body with rough scales, 28 -33 in lateral series, head scaleless.
Olivaceous with dark mottling above; 2 dark streaks from eye down along snout; dark stripe on cheek connects to dark blotch at corner of mouth; ~ 5 oblong blotches along mid flank, last on tail base has dark spot above and below; dorsal fins and tail fin finely checked and marked with dark orange-brown and black; tail fin with upper and lower orange stripes; 5th dorsal spine of male has large black spot; pelvic blackish, with whitish margin.
Size: 4 cm.
Habitat: mangroves.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Central Gulf of California to Peru.
