Pycnomma semisquamatum Rutter, 1904

Secret goby

Body elongate, compressed; head depressed, narrow between eyes; front and rear nostrils tubular, rear shorter than front; no barbels on head; side of head with 3 pores (none on preopercle), pores without fleshy flaps at rear margins; mouth terminal, oblique; first dorsal fin with VII spines + I, 10-11; anal rays I, 9-10; pelvic fins completely separate; tail fin oval, longer than head; scales rough, large, none on head; tail fin base with 4 large, very rough scales.

Mottled brownish; side of body with about 4-5 diffuse blackish, hourglass-shaped bars and black bar at base of tail fin; a pair of creamy-yellow bars below spinous dorsal fin; head with white spots and diagonal brown bars radiating from eye; a small black spot at bottom of gill cover; median fins with white spots on rays and white margin on both dorsal fins.

Size: reaches 6.3 cm.

Inhabits crevices and ledges of weed-covered rocky reefs.

Depth: 2-20 m.
