Gobiosoma chiquita (Jenkins & Evermann, 1889)

Sonora goby

Body robust; head rounded, broader than deep; snout blunt; mandibular papilla rows parallel; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; tongue round to blunt; head without barbells; front nostril tubular, rear with raised rim; dorsal fin VII (first 2 dorsal spines of males typically prolonged) + I, 10 (9-11) rays; anal I, 9 (8-10) rays; pectoral rays 18-21 (usually 19-20); pelvics fused in disc;  body scales large, rough,  scales of middle of side extending forward from caudal fin base to pectoral fin axil, dorsally the scales extending forward to level between base of 4th-6th dorsal spines; head scaleless.

Brown to grey with small white spots on cheek, operculum, and body and tail fin; a series of diffuse white bars (sometimes fragmented) on side of body; 8-10 small blackish spots along middle of side; a blackish patch just behind cheek; dorsal fins and especially caudal fin with small white spots.

Size: grows to 7.5 cm.

Habitat: common on sand bottoms of tide pools and rocky reefs.

Depth: to 10 m.

Gulf of California.
