White-margined goby

Head round; a pair of joined barbels under chin, 1 prominent barbel under front nostril; pore between front edges of eyes, 2 pores above opercle, pores on preopercle; both nostrils tubular; teeth in bands, with some canines, none on sides of roof of mouth; tongue with round tip; gill opening restricted to vertical opening as long as width of pectoral fin base; dorsal fin VII + I, 13, long based; anal I, 10; pelvics fused in disc with smooth front edge; tail round, with 17 segmented rays; scales small (32-55 along side), mainly rough, extend forwards to just behind inner pectoral base; 2 very rough scales at base of tail fin; head, breast & belly scaleless.

Whitish;  about 3 dark lines radiate down from eye; dark bar across nape;body with ~ 5 wide blackish bars that extend onto the dorsal fin (2 on 1st dorsal, 3 on the 2nd), with intervening narrow bars; tail fin with a broad black bar at its base, 2 faint outer bars; both sexes similarly colored.

Size: 4.6 cm.

Habitat: estuarine, rocky and mangrove tidepool; rock, shell and mud bottoms.

Depth: 0-10 m.

El Salvador to Panama.
