Head & body compressed; body relatively slender (greatest depth 17-22% of SL); head rounded, elongate (25-31% of SL); eye large, 6.7-9.2% of SL; mouth large, very oblique; teeth in several rows; dorsal fin VII (spines moderately filamentous, longest reaching middle of base of soft dorsal) + I, 14-16; anal I, 14-16; last rays of dorsal & anal reach base of tail fin; pectoral rays 24-26, just reaches origin of anal fin; pelvics fused to form disc, front margin of disc scalloped, not reaching anus; tail base slender (least depth 7.7-9.1% of SL); tail long (~ 50% of SL), strongly pointed; scales large (28-29 rows along body), rough; 9-10 scales before dorsal fin; 1-2 large, 1-2 small scales on upper opercle, several medium sized on upper preopercle, 1 large + several small on lower preopercle; 1 large + 4-5 medium sized scales on base of pectoral fin.
Body and head grey-brown, orangish above; a prominent black line on top lip; 1st dorsal fin without dark spot, spines orange; 2nd dorsal fin with two inner rows of orange spots and an outer orange stripe; tail fin with a large dark spot covering upper base, upper half of fin with orange spots, lower ½ with 2 orange stripes; pelvics blackish; anal fin with two orange stripes.
Size: reaches 13 cm.
Habitat: benthic on soft bottoms.
Depth: 15-150 m.
Malpelo and Panama to Ecuador.
