Head & body compressed; body relatively slender (greatest depth 17-22.5% of SL); head rounded, elongate (25-32% of SL); eye large, 7-10% of SL; mouth large, very oblique; teeth in several rows; dorsal fin VII (4th & 5th spines of dorsal very long and filamentous, reaching to or beyond tail fin base) + I, 13-14; anal I, 13-15; last rays of dorsal & anal reach base of tail fin; pectoral rays 22-26, reaches beyond origin of anal fin; pelvics fused to form disc, front margin of disc scalloped, reaches anus; tail base deep (least depth 9-14% of SL); tail fin long (~ 50% of SL), strongly pointed; scales large (24-28 rows along body), rough; 6-9 scales before dorsal fin; 1 large + several small on upper opercle; several medium sized on upper preopercle; 1 large + 1-2 small scales on base of pectoral fin.
Body grey-brown with 2 rows of irregular orange blotches; head with orange spots and lines; no dark line along top lip; 1 dark spot with clear margin covering base of last 3 dorsal fin spines; gill membranes, pelvic, anal and lower ½ of tail fin black; pectoral and dorsal fins dusky; no black spot at base of tail fin.
Size: to 14 cm.
Habitat: muddy sand bottoms.
Depth: 15-120 m.
The Gulf of California to Colombia.
