Redlight goby
Snout profile straight to rounded; nape with low crest; mouth small, relatively horizontal; some teeth enlarged, none on roof of mouth; head pores present, usually 1 between center of eyes, 1 pair between rear nostrils; papillae on cheek in 1 horizontal row; mouth small, relatively horizontal; some teeth enlarged, none on roof of mouth; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI +I, 8-9 rays, length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-9 rays; pectoral rays 19-21 (usually 20); pelvics fused into a disc; tail fin rounded; body covered with scales, scales large, rough, absent on head; midlateral scales 25-26.
Head & body semi-transparent; head with a series of reddish-orange stripes; body with about 5 horizontal rows of reddish-orange to brown spots on side; several internal elongate white blotches along center of rear flank; base of tail fin with a dark brown spot bounded above and below by a white spot; a pair of red-orange to brown spots on base of pectoral fin.
Maximum size, 8 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble fringe of rocky reefs or coral patches.
Depth: 2-40 m.
Central Baja and the Gulf of California to central Peru, the Revillagigedos, Malpelo, the Galapagos and Cocos.
