Head flattened, with eyes on top; 5 head pores with fleshy flaps at margin, none on preopercle; rear nostril longer than front nostril; fringe of cirri above rear of top lip; tongue slightly notched at front; dorsal fin VII + I, 9-11; anal rays I, 10; pectoral rays 18-19; pelvic fins I, 5, separate except for inner rays being connected at their base by a low ridge; large fish without scales, small individuals with 2 or 4 imbedded, very rough scales at base of tail fin.
Brown to nearly white; head with small white spots; body with larger white spots and sometimes blotches or wavy vertical lines; a short dark bar on lower part of edge of gill cover; males with midlateral row of double brown spots and oblique dark stripes on dorsal fins.
Size: to 7 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble adjacent to rocky reefs.
Depth: 1-5 m.
