Bearded clingfish
Tadpole shaped, head broad, depressed; papillae on head well developed, some finger-like, (3( 0-4) small papillae on tip of snout above top lip, 1 large + 3 small papillae on underside of head behind jaw; top lip broad, much wider at front than at sides; rear nostril over front edge of eye, front nostril with a large 2-lobed flap; top jaws each with an irregular outer row of pointed teeth, & a patch of irregular teeth behind them, canines along side; teeth on lower jaw in 2 rows, outer row larger, 4 pairs of round-tipped incisors at front in adult (3, 3-tipped in juvenile), followed by row of large canines; anus much closer to anal fin origin than sucker; sucker large, with papillae at front (a broad band), center (2 widely spaced patches) & rear, with 7-11 rows of papillae across front section, patches in center each with 4-5 longitudinal rows of papillae; a large fleshy pad with free rear edge at base of pectoral fin; dorsal fin 14-15 rays, well behind pectoral; anal rays 10-11; pectoral rays 23-25; caudal rays 12.
(Preserved fish) Top and sides light grey to light brown, often with dense small dark spots; translucent below; dorsal, tail and anal with black bar along base, then a white bar, then grey, then clear to white margins, on tail black bar extends along top and bottom margins of fin; pectoral with brown spots along rays.
Size: 8 cm.
Habitat: sandy rocks.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Southern California through much of the Gulf of California to Panama.
