Barnaclebill blenny
Moderately elongate; short robust head, with very steep front profile; a 4-branched cirrus over eye, no cirri at nostrils or on nape; teeth with blunt flattened tips, in single rows, not movable, no canines on either jaw; gill openings restricted to sides of body by fusion of gill cover membranes to throat; dorsal fin X-XII, 15-16, with a slight notch between the spiny and soft parts; fin rays unbranched, except on tail fin; lateral line ends under end of spiny dorsal fin; no scales.
Upper sides dark brown with a horizontal rows of circular tan patches (often with dark brown centers) just below base of dorsal fin and second row of smaller patches or spots just below; lower sides whitish to yellow; head with small brown spots and a prominent tan oblique band behind eye, with a dark-edged whitish stripe on its upper and lower margin.
Size: grows to 7 cm.
Lives in empty barnacle shells, usually in 1-3 m.
Depth: 1-10 m.
Central Baja and the Central Gulf of California to Peru, including Galapagos, Cocos and Malpelo Islands.
Has been collected in the locks at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal.
