Body very elongate; head large, angular, depressed; no cirri over eye or on nape; surface of eye divided by fleshy bar; teeth in jaws forming narrow bands; teeth on center but not sides of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XXII, 12-13, a notch between spines and rays; anal fin with II, 24, short, stout spines have a fleshy covering; scales very small, smooth, ~ 75 in lateral series.
Dark greyish with light and dark mottlings; head blackish; small white spots present on head, pectoral fin base, and upper back.
Maximum recorded size 11 cm.
Habitat: occurs in very shallow water along rocky shores.
Depth: 0-5 m.
The tip of Baja California and central Mexico to Colombia.
