Head slender, snout pointed, < eye; underside of head between front of opercular flaps with 1-2 pores; a pair of heavily branched nape cirri, space between those 1.9-2.1 times width of a cirrus base;a branched cirrus over eye; upper part of rear end of top jaw covered by bone under eye; no small teeth behind outer row of large teeth on upper jaw; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; gill rakers 11-13; dorsal fin XX, 11, (XIX-XXI, 10-12), 1st spine short, 10% SL or less,notch between spines and rays; anal II, 20 (18-21); pectoral 14; 3 pelvic soft rays, length of shortest ray 47-62% longest ray; ; 52-58 lateral line scales; belly scales smaller than flank scales; scales present in front of dorsal fin, also on breast of males; scales absent from prepectoral region.
Male brown to reddish brown on back with 2-3 large black patches posteriorly, belly greenish, with tiny white spots; female brownish above, yellowish below, with several diffuse brownish bars across side, with many white spots.
Size: attains 6.5 cm.
Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.
Depth: 1-18 m.
The lower half of Baja, Mazatlan to Ecuador.
