Body robust; head broad, snout blunt; eye large; nostrils with cirri; a branched cirrus over each eye; large bunch of heavily branched cirri on each side of nape; a dense covering of sensory pores on head, especially behind eye;mouth large, slightly oblique, top rear jawbone exposed, not in a sheath; no enlarged canine behind patch of small teeth on each side of upper and lower jaw; roof of mouth - teeth at sides larger than those at center front; dorsal fin XVII-XIX, front spines not long, 11-13, notched between spines and rays; anal rays II, 17-18; pectoral rays 14 (13-15); 3 pelvic soft rays; 65-69 lateral line scales; 7-8 rows of scales between LL and 6th dorsal spine; 4-6 scales before dorsal fin; head scaleless, except for < 10 scales along top edge of gill cover .
Brownish with heavy dark brown mottling & irregular dark bars on sides; a pair of oblique brown bands across cheek; prominent dark spotting on dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins; dorsal fin with an ocellus at front.
Size: Attains at least 13 cm.
Inhabits weed-covered rocky reefs.
Depth: 1-20 m.
Central Baja California and the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Revillagigedos and Galapagos Islands.
