Body elongate, compressed, tapering to tail; head robust, snout broadly rounded; eyes not on stalks, without papillae; top and bottom lips with skin flaps, lower lip with 30 (21-33) flaps, those about 2X abundance of top flaps; tubular nostrils; dorsal fin originates on nape, in two sections, III-spined front finlet that is 10-25% higher than rest of spines,usually separate from rest of fin , III + XIV-XVI, 15-17; segmented anal rays 26-28; pectoral rays 13-15 (usually 14); pelvic fins inserted under throat, each with I, 3, rays thickened and free at the tips; tail fin with some branched rays; lateral line continuous, bends down under last dorsal spine; scales smooth; no scales on head or preoperculum; pectoral base scaled; belly with a narrow band of scales along midline; lateral-line scales 47 (45-48); scales in straight (posterior) part of lateral line 16-17.
White with a pair of broad blackish bars on middle of body and smaller bars or saddles below dorsal finlet and across base of caudal fin; also about 5 white spots interrupting bars along lower side.
Size: to 5 cm.
Habitat: sandy bottoms.
Depth: 1-15 m.
Costa Rica and Panama.
