Body compressed, tapering to tail; head moderate size; eyes not on stalks, usually with minute papila; lower lips with 4 skin flaps, none on top lips; lower jaw slightly protruding; tubular nostrils; dorsal fin origin on nape, before level of upper corner of operculum, an isolated finlet of III spines at front, then main fin, III + VIII-XI (total XI-XIV), 28 (25-30); segmented anal rays 33 (30-35); pectoral rays 12 (11-14); tail fin with some branched rays; lateral line continuous, bends down between dorsal elements 20-23 (17-24); scales smooth; head, pectoral base and belly scaleless; total lateral-line scales 48 (44-53); scales in straight (posterior) part of lateral line 20 (18-23).
Head usualy with indistinct bar crossing through eyes; body whitish with 7 (6-8) dark greyish saddles(equal to or slightly narrower than pale interspaces) on upper half of side, also shorter dark saddles on back between each major saddle.
Maximum length to 5.2 cm.
Habitat: sandy bottoms.
Depth: 5-137 m.
Central Baja to the western Gulf of California, central Mexico to Colombia, also the Galapagos, Revillagigedos and Malpelo.
