Body compressed, tapering to tail; head large, flattened above, rounded and narrow at front; eyes protrusible, on stalks, with papillae; chin projecting well beyond lower lips; tubular nostrils, rear nostril opens near base of front nostril; both lips with skin flaps, (17 (15-19) above, 25 (24-30) below; operculum with 17 (12-21) skin flaps; dorsal fin origin on nape, before level of upper corner of operculum, front IV (II-VII) spines separate from fin and without membranes, XII (XI-XIII), 33 (31-35); anal II, 37 (35-39); pectoral usually 13 rays; no notch under tail base; dorsal and anal fins not joined by membranes to base of tail fin; tail fin short (~9.9 % of SL) with some branched rays; lateral line continuous, bends down under last dorsal spine; scales smooth, head and belly scaleless; lateral line scales 51 (49-53); scales in several rows (5-6 rows at front) above all of lateral line arch.
Inside mouth pigmented; nape with dark network, without bars; 3-6 small pale spots along front of dorsal fin base; sides with 3 more or less distinct dark stripes (along upper, middle and lower side); usually a dark spot on base of tail fin; dorsal and anal lightly shaded with brown.
Size: 10.1 cm.
Habitat: coastal sandy areas and estuaries.
Depth: 1-37 m.
Nicaragua to Ecuador.
