Body moderately elongate; large pointed cirrus over eye; small spinules on edge of orbits, margin of preopercle, nape, and dorsal surface of snout; teeth on sides of roof of mouth; dorsal fins III+XIII+12-13, segmented rays branched except first; anal rays II, 21-22; pelvic fins joined by membrane for at least 1/3 of length of outer ray; lateral line in 2 sections, 1st section with 27-29 tubed scales, 2nd with 8-10 notched scales; total scales in longitudinal series 33-38; scales rough except smooth on belly; preopercle mostly covered with small scales; scales present on pectoral-fin base.
Female: light brown to reddish pink with four H-shaped red-brown bars on side; a dark stripe along the flank, and black band at base of caudal fin; a large whitish blotch between each set of bars, that in front of tail-base bar silvery white; first dorsal fin red and black; breeding male: 1st dorsal black with two central yellow spots; when breeding body overall reddish, first dorsal colors very bright, a black bar on base of tail fin.
Size: grows to 10 cm.
Inhabits rocky reefs.
Depth: 1-15 m.
