Delicate triplefin
Head moderate, body slender; a short, broad cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; bone bearing nostrils with a row of small spines; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; top of head and upper opercular margin spiny; 3 dorsal fins: III + X-XII + 7-9, last 4-5 soft rays branched; anal soft rays15-16; pectoral 15 (14-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; scales medium to large, 28-32 in longitudinal series; body scales rough, except smooth just in front of anus; head scaleless except several scales on upper opercle; large scale present inside pectoral base and at start of lateral line; scales of 1st row above lateral line much larger than those in 2nd row; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored (14-16), those on rear part notched (16-19).
Tan with 5-6 relatively narrow dark bars on side, including intense black bar on tail base; brown bar below eye; a prominent dark brown spot or blotch at base of lower pectoral rays; pectoral fin with narrow dark bars.
Size: reaches 3.8 cm.
Inhabits shallow reefs.
Depth: 1-5 m.
Central Baja to the central Gulf of California to Panama.
