Head moderate, body robust; a short, broad cirrus over eye; no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; bone that carries nostrils without spines or with a few small spines; dorsal fins: III + XII-XIII + 9-11, soft rays branched except for first 1-2 and last ray; anal soft rays 17-20; pectoral 16 (15-17); pelvic fins completely separate; scales medium to large, 31-34 in longitudinal series; body scales rough, except smooth on side of belly; head scaleless except small patch of scales on upper opercle; scales absent on pectoral-fin base and middle of belly; first 2 scalesabove lateral line equal in size; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored (14-17), those on rear part notched (19-22).
Whitish or tan; female with 4 slightly diagonal brown bars on side and black band around base of tail fin; scale margins dusky imparting network pattern; male with reddish head, 4 black bars on body and tail black with two white bars.
Size: grows to about 6.9 cm.
Habitat: occurs along rocky shores.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Central Baja through the lower Gulf of California.
