Cortez triplefin

Body short, robust; head large; cirri on head small, simple, 1 pair over nostrils, none over eyes; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; three dorsal fins (III + XII-XIII + 10-11); dorsal fin soft rays unbranched; anal fin II, 18; pelvic fins completely separate; lateral line gradually descending from upper edge of gill cover to midlateral axis, with 15-16 tubed scales followed by 18-19 notched scales; scales above lateral line about as wide as long; scales small, none on head, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fins; total scales in longitudinal series 36.

Green to brownish above, whitish below; five oblique brown to blackish bars on side including black band on tail base; tail fin clear, thin white bar at base; male: front 4 body bars reduced to black blotches along midline; tail fin black with thin white bar at base.

Size: to 4.8 cm.

Habitat: common in the rocky intertidal zone.

Depth: 1-5 m.

Western and NE Gulf of California.
