Body short, robust; head large; cirri on head small, simple, 1 pair over nostrils, 1 pair over eyes; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; three dorsal fins (III + XIII + 9); dorsal fin soft rays unbranched; anal fin II, 18; pelvic fins completely separate; lateral line gradually descending from upper edge of gill cover to midlateral axis, with 21-26 tubed scales followed by 8-12 notched scales; scales above lateral line about twice as wide as long; scales small, none on head, breast, belly, and base of pectoral fins; total scales in longitudinal series 33-35.
Female: greyish, with orange lines on head and 3 irregular orange bars on body; Male: head reddish, side with 3 broad dark brown bars with narrow whitish spaces between them; a black band around base of tail; caudal fin frequently black with pale base.
Size: reaches about 3.5 cm.
Inhabits shallow rocky areas.
Depth: 1-35 m.
