Galapagos razorfish, Blackspot wrasse

Head and body strongly compressed; head profile steep, with a fleshy longitudinal keel at front; eye on upper ½ of head; both jaws with canines at front, lower jaw without rear canine tooth; dorsal fin continuous, IX, 12, spines regularly spaced, juvenile without raised front spines; anal III, 12; pectoral 12; tail slightly convex; lateral line in 2 sections, rear section on tail base, 19-20 + 5 pored scales.

TP: iridescent dark blue green with scattered scale-sized black blotches on sides. IP: mainly pinkish orange without dark markings; juveniles either uniform sandy white or yellowish brown with dark stripe on upper part of side.

Size: reaches about 15 cm.

Inhabits open sand slopes, usually below 10m depth; in Galapagos adults often share this habitat with the garden eel Heteroconger klausewitzi.

Depth: 5-25 m.
