Body oval, compressed; 1 pair of nostrils; margin of preopercle smooth; margins of bones under eye smooth, without notch between them, lower edge of rearmost of those two bones partly attached to cheek; mouth small, protrusible; teeth in single row, with flattened tips; gill rakers 20-21; a single continuous dorsal fin, XIII, 17; anal rays II, 13; pectoral rays 20-23; no projecting short spines at upper and lower base of tail fin; tail fin bluntly forked; scales are moderately large and rough; most of body scales with small accessory scales; body scaled, head largely scaled, as are the basal parts of the median fins; lateral-line scales 19-21; lateral line incomplete, ends under end of dorsal fin base.
Brown, with darker scale margins; lower head sometimes suffused with pink; an incomplete yellow to orange bar on middle of side; small blue spots on upper head and back; thin blue edging to dorsal, anal and pelvic fins; juveniles dark brown with a blue streak or spot on most scales, blue spots and lines on head, and narrow blue margins on most fins.
Size: attains a maximum length of 30 cm.
Inhabits rocky shores.
Depth: 1-10 m.
The southern Galapagos Islands, northern Peru to northern Chile.
