Peruvian Chromis

Body deep, strongly compressed, back strongly arched; head moderate (27-31% of LS); snout short, blunt; 1 pair of nostrils; edge of bone under eye smooth; preopercle smooth or with occasional fine serrations; mouth short, protrusible, oblique, opens at front; teeth in 2 rows, outer conical, larger; gill rakers 29-33; a single continuous dorsal fin, XII, rear spines not shorter than middle spines, 14 (13-15); anal II, 13-14; ends of soft dorsal and soft anal distinctly angular; pectoral moderate (usually not reaching anal origin, 28-30% of LS) 19-21 rays; 2-3 short projecting spines at upper and lower base of tail fin; tail moderately forked, top lobe distinctly > head length; scales large and rough; 20-21 lateral line scales; body scaled, most of head scaled, basal parts of the median fins scaled; lateral line incomplete, ends under end of dorsal fin base.

Blue grey above, shading to paler below; fins dark grey. Juvenile: head, body and fins grey; base of pectoral fin black; outer 1/3 of dorsal fin black; outer edges of dorsal, pelvic and anal fins, and upper and lower edges of tail fin iridescent blue.

Size: reaches 28 cm.

Habitat: benthic on shallow rocky reefs.

Depth: 5-35 m?

Ecuador to Chile.
