Cynoscion stolzmanni (Steindachner, 1879)

Yellowtail corvina, Stolzmann's weakfish, Yellowtail weakfish

Elongate, fusiform, compressed, oval cross-section; head conical, upper profile straight, slightly concave over eye; mouth strongly oblique, ends after eye, lower jaw very prominent; front of top jaws with 1 pair of large pointed canines; no pores or barbels on chin; 8-9 lower gill rakers; margin of preopercle smooth; dorsal with long base, no gap separating the two parts, X + I, 19-21; anal II, 8-9; pectoral fins short, ending well short of tips of depressed pelvic fins; tail fin S-shaped, more sharply pointed in young; scales in head and body rough, a few smooth scales around eye and on underside of head; soft dorsal fin and anal fin without a scaly sheath; 60-61 scales on lateral line, these larger than adjacent rows and with small accessory scales.

Color silver, steel blue on upper back; inside operculum and pectoral axil black; inside of mouth orange,  a dark crescent behind center of lower teeth; soft dorsal with dusky margin; tail fin yellow; other fins yellowish.

Size: attains at least 90 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters, including estuaries.

Depth: 1-30 m.

The mouth of the Gulf of California to Peru.
