Sharpnose corvina, Cachema weakfish, Sharp-nose weakfish

Elongate, compressed, oval cross-section; head pointed, nape profile straight; mouth strongly oblique, opens above mid-eye level, upper jaw not reaching level of rear margin of eye, lower jaw projecting; front of top jaws with 1 pair of large pointed canines; no barbels or pores on chin; 7-8 lower gill rakers, gill rakers shorter than gill filaments in center of gill arch; margin of preopercle smooth; dorsal with long base, no gap separating the two parts, IX-X + I, 20-22; anal II, 10; pectoral fins 16-17, short, end well before pelvic tip; rear margin of tail ~ straight; all scales smooth; anal & soft dorsal fins without a scaly sheath; lateral line straight slightly arched anteriorly; 60-70 scales on lateral line; lateral line scales enlarged, with small accessory scales.

Color silvery, bluish grey on upper back; dorsal and caudal fins dusky, other fins whitish; axil of pectoral fin blackish.

Size: to 60 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters; juveniles enter river mouths and shallow. estuaries.

Depth: 1-30 m.

SE Gulf of California to Peru; vagrant in the Galapagos.
