Cynoscion albus (Günther, 1864)

Queen weakfish, Whitefin weakfish

Elongate, fusiform, compressed, oval cross-section; head low, pointed, not spongy on top; eye moderate; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; front of top jaws with 1 pair of large pointed canines; no barbels or pores on chin; gill rakers long and slender, 8-9 lower rakers; preoperculum smooth; dorsal with long base, deep notch, X (IX-X) + I, 19-22;  anal fin with II small (< ½ length of 1st  ray) weak spines, 8-9 rays; pectoral fins 17-18, relatively long, reaching half way to anus; rear margin of tail with blunt point or S shaped; scales large, rough on body, smooth on head;  soft dorsal and anal fins with a basal sheath 3 scales wide; lateral line arched anteriorly and straight well before level of anus; pored lateral-line scales 54-58; lateral line scales smaller than adjacent scales, and with small accessory scales.

Color mainly silvery, bluish-grey above with black opercle lining; fins clear or whitish; inside mouth yellow; tip of lower jaw  black.

Size: reaches 130 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters, including estuaries and river mouths.

Depth: 1-50 m.

The SE Gulf of Mexico to Peru.
