Queenfish, Queen croaker

Elongate, compressed;  forehead profile straight to slightly concave; mouth large, slightly oblique, opens at front, lower jaw slightly projecting; teeth pointed, 1-2 rows, no large canines; 2 pores on chin, no barbels; snout with 8 pores; 25-27 gill rakers, moderately long, slender; preopercle border smooth to serrated; dorsal fin VIII-IX + I spines, 1st  dorsal short, separated from soft part (18-21) by large gap; anal base long, spines short, thin, II, 21-23; pectorals short; tail slightly concave; scales rough on body, smooth on head; soft dorsal and anal entirely scaled; 59-64 lateral line scales.

Blue grey to tan upper body; belly bright silver; sides with dark lines along scale rows; pectoral dark, darker on base; other fins yellowish.

Size: 30.5 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms, bays and tidal lagoons.

Depth: 0-181 m.

Oregon to the SW Gulf of California.
