Body elongated, compressed, dorsal profile gently convex at nape, nearly straight over head and snout, with long tail base; head long, compressed; snout moderately long, conical; eye large (17% of head length); mouth large, oblique, opens at front; teeth in 2-3 series, without canines; chin with a pair of pores on each side and a hole in center, without barbels; gill rakers short, 22-29 preoperculum weakly serrated; dorsal fin VIII-IX, I, 21-23, spines long, slender, with deep notch between spiny and soft parts; anal fin II, 8-10, 2nd spine slender, about 2/3 length of longest ray; pectoral 16-18, moderately long ( reaching to tip of pelvic), pointed; pelvics inserted a little behind base of pectoral, without a filament; tail concave; scales smooth on body, rough on head; 72-76 scales on lateral line, 8 rows between lateral line and 1st dorsal spine; lateral line slightly arched at front, curving down to mid-body at level of anal fin origin.
Blue-grey above, silver below; faint lines along scale rows; lining of gill cavity dark; inner base of pectoral dark, inner ¼ of fin dark grey, outer ¾ yellow; dorsal grey; tail dark grey, lower border broadly yellow; anal yellow; pelvics pale yellow.
Size: reaches 75 cm.
Habitat: soft bottoms.
Dept: 5-50 m?.
Northern Peru to Chile, plus the Galapagos.
