Rock croaker, Pacific highhat

Body oblong, deep, back strongly arched; snout overhangs horizontal mouth; top jaw notched, encloses lower; chin with 5 pores, no barbels; 19-23 short gill rakers; preopercle weakly serrated; dorsal fin with long base, deep notch between spiny and soft parts, spiny part high,  bluntly pointed, VII-VIII + I, 42-45; anal fin with short base, II, 7-8, 2nd  spine thick, ~2/3 length 1st ray; pectoral short; tail fin rounded; scales rough  except smooth on operculum; 50-56 lateral line scales; inner 2/3 of soft dorsal and anal fins covered with thick sheaths of scales.

Grey, sometimes with 4-7 faint dark stripes along side of body, some passing onto head; fins without white borders; juveniles with 7-8 thin dark stripes, a black bar on the 1st dorsal and pelvic fins.

Size: 30 cm?

Habitat: rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-35 m?.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos.
