Galapagos rock croaker, Odd highhat

Body oblong, deep, back strongly arched;  eye relatively large, 25-33% of head length;snout overhangs horizontal mouth; top jaw notched, encloses lower; chin with 5 pores, no barbels; 16-18 short gill rakers; preopercle almost smooth; dorsal fin with long base, deep notch between spiny and soft parts, spiny part high, rounded, XI +I, 32-33; anal fin with short base, II, 8, 2nd  spine thick, slightly shorter than 1st ray; pectoral short; tail fin rounded; all scales rough; 50-53 lateral line scales; soft dorsal and anal fins covered with thick sheaths of scales.

Adult with head, body and fins charcoal. Juveniles silvery white, with 8-9 undulating black stripes on sides; borders of dorsal and tail fins dark.

Size: to about 30 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-35 m.

Galapagos Islands.
