Body oblong, deep; snout overhangs horizontal mouth; top jaw notched, encloses lower; chin with 5 pores, no barbels; 15-17 short gill rakers; preopercle weakly serrated; dorsal fin with long base, deep notch between spiny and soft parts,  spiny part high, pointed,  IX-XI +I, 35-38; anal fin with short base, II, 7-8, 2nd  spine thick, ~length of 1st  ray; pectoral short; tail fin rounded; all scales rough; 52-59 lateral line scales; soft dorsal and anal fins covered with thick sheaths of scales.

Pale grey-brown to black; body, but not head, with 4 thin black horizontal stripes; fins dusky; iris yellow-brown.

Size: 40 cm.

Habitat rocky.

Depth: 5-60 m.

Colombia to Peru.
