Elongate, compressed; head conical, compressed; eyes large; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pores larger, well separated, not in a hole; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth minute, in bands on jaws, on roof of mouth; dorsal fin - spiny and soft parts almost separate, XII spines, 12-14 rays, soft fin with shorter base than spiny fin; tail shallowly forked; anal - III small spines, 11 (11-12) rays, soft part similar in size and form to soft dorsal; longitudinal scales 60-64; scale rows above lateral line parallel to lateral line; 8 scale rows between lateral line and origin of dorsal fin.

Silvery with 6-7 orange-brown stripes on side; only 3-4 stripes on upper half of body evident in small specimens.

Size: reaches 30 cm.

Habitat: forms large schools around piers and on weed- covered rocky reefs.

Depth: 0-33 m.

Central California to the Gulf of California.
