Elongate, compressed; head conical, compressed; eyes large, vertical ovals; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pores larger, well separated, not in a hole; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth minute, in bands on jaws, on roof of mouth; dorsal fin - spiny and soft parts almost separate, XI, I,longest spine reaching second dorsal,17-19 rays, soft fin with longer base than spiny fin;pectoral short, no reaching level of anus; tail shallowly forked; anal - III small spines, 17-18 rays, soft part similar in size and form to soft dorsal; lateral-line scales 55-62.

Silvery with about 6 dark stripes on upper two-thirds of side, those on middle of side brown, becoming blackish on back; a prominent black spot at base of tail fin.

Size: attains 25.4 cm.

Habitat: over sandy bottoms. Generally occurs in mixed schools with other grunts.

Depth: 0-33 m.

Southern Baja California and the mouth of the Gulf of California to Peru, the Galapagos.
