Elongate, compressed; head conical, compressed; eyes large; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pores larger, well separated, not in a hole; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth minute, in bands on jaws, on roof of mouth; dorsal fin - spiny and soft parts almost separate, XI, I,longest spine not reaching second dorsal,17-18 rays, soft fin with longer base than spiny fin;pectoral short, no reaching level of anus; tail shallowly forked; anal - III small spines, 17-18 rays, soft part similar in size and form to soft dorsal; lateral-line scales 65-70.
Grey, 3 broad stripes along midflank and upper back, lowest one expanded into spot on tail base.
Size: 30 cm.
Habitat: sandy bottoms.
Depth: 0-10 m?
Colombia to central Peru.
