Elongate, compressed; head conical, compressed; eyes large; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pores larger, well separated, not in a hole; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth minute, in bands on jaws, on roof of mouth; dorsal fin - spiny and soft parts almost separate, XI, I,17-18 rays, soft fin with longer base than spiny fin; tail shallowly forked; anal - III small spines, 17-18 rays, soft part similar in size and form to soft dorsal; lateral-line scales 56-60.
Silvery bluish without distinguishing marks.
Size: to 22 cm.
Habitat: forms schools in rocky shallows.
Depth: 3-20 m.
Galapagos Islands.
