Forbe's grunt

Body slender (depth 2.8-3.0 in SL), strongly compressed; mouth short, ends before eye, with thin lips; chin with 2 front pores and 2 rear pores in central hole, plus a longitudinal groove; preopercle margin smooth, with vertical margin straight; lower gill rakers 13-14; dorsal fin XII-XIII, 15, without notch between spines and rays;  anal fin with long base, III, 11, spines long, 2nd    = 3rd; pectoral long, curved, pointed; tail forked; body scales without small accessory scales; 9-10 scale rows between lateral line and dorsal origin; soft dorsal and anal scaleless; lateral line 80-85 scales.

Silvery grey, sometimes with narrow orange stripes corresponding with scale rows on sides; opercular membrane dark.

Size: attains at least 36 cm.

Habitat: forms schools in sandy areas near rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-30 m.

Galapagos Islands.
