Haemulopsis leuciscus (Günther, 1864)

Raucous grunt, White grunt

Moderately elongate oval body; wide between eyes; nape profile strongly elevated and ventral profile of head rather straight; snout relatively short; forehead profile convex; mouth small, slightly oblique, opens at front; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pair in a deep hole; preopercle finely serrated; lower gill rakers 9-14; dorsal fin XII, 14, continuous, with notch between spiny and soft parts; anal rays III, 7-8, 2nd  spine shorter than the 3rd, 3rd  > eye, reaching to or beyond base of last anal ray; pectoral fins shorter than head; body scales without small accessory scales; soft dorsal and anal with small scales between rays as well as a scaly sheath on base; lateral-line scales 50-54.
Silver; upper edge of gill opening narrowly blackish; rear of jaws dark; diffuse dark stripes sometimes evident on side; dorsal, anal and tail fins dusky, pelvics yellowish.
Size: reaches 40 cm.
Inhabits coastal seas on sandy or muddy bottoms.
Depth: 0-60 m.
Northern Baja and the Gulf of California to Peru.
