Trachinotus rhodopus Gill, 1863

Gafftopsail pompano

Body diamond shaped, strongly compressed; snout bluntly pointed; top jaw extendible; jaw teeth, if present, in narrow bands; gill rakers (excluding rudiments) short, 21-26;  dorsal fin with VI short, stout, semi-isolated spines (1st  often imbedded) before main part of fin; dorsal rays VI + I, 19-21; anal rays II + I, 18-20; dorsal & anal fins without isolated finlets behind, with long pointed lobes at front; base of anal about same length as that of soft dorsal; pectoral fin < head length; tail base without notches above & below; lateral line slightly arched at front; no scutes (hard, spiny scales) on lateral line; body scales oval.

Silvery with 4-6 yellowish to brown bars; fins yellow to reddish.

Grows to at least 61 cm.

Pelagic; often common around rocky offshore islets where it is seen close to the surface.

Depth: 0-30 m.

Southern California to theGulf of California to Peru, and Cocos, Galapagos and Malpelo.
