Pacific bumper

Head & body a deep, strongly compressed oval; lower body profile strongly convex, more so than upper profile; pectoral longer than head, curved; dorsal rays VIII+I, 25-28; anal rays II+I, 25-28; no finlets after dorsal and anal fins; lateral line with a pronounced, short anterior arch; 6-12 very weak scutes on tail base; scales small, over most of body.

Body and head dark metallic blue above, silver on sides; a black spot in the upper border of the operculum; a black saddle on the upper part of the tail base; tail yellow.

Size: reaches 31 cm.

Habitat: pelagic, forms schools in shallow coastal seas, also enters estuaries.

Depth: 0-53 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru, vagrants to the Revillagigedos, Galapagos and Malpelo.
