Body deep, compressed, back moderately elevated; head pointed; mouth large; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; teeth fixed; roof of mouth with teeth on sides and center; lower gill rakers 18-22; preopercle finely serrated; dorsal X, 13, 3rd spine largest, 2x length of 9th spine & longer than rays, rear margin of soft fin gently convex; anal rays III, 7, spines strong, 2nd largest; pectoral long, rounded, 17-19; pelvics inserted under or slightly behind pectoral base; tail rounded to concave, 13-15 branched rays; scales small, rough; 92-104 lateral scales, 13-15 between lateral line and dorsal origin; rear of top jawbone without scales.
Grey-brown to brown head and body; dense orange spots and horizontal lines on front and side of head; redbrown spots and undulating horizontal lines along upper back to tail; lateral line whitish; often an elongate white blotch on back under junction of dorsal spines and rays; spiny dorsal grey with whitish central stripe & dark outer margin, soft dorsal dark grey with brown spots; tail brown with darker spots on base, rays blackish; anal dark grey with brown spots, spines white; pelvic dark grey, white front border; pectoral yellowish.
Size: 32 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: 1-50 m?
