Body elongate, compressed; head short, compressed, forehead convex; upper edge of eye with long, slender flap; mouth slightly oblique, reaches past rear of eye; small simple teeth in bands on jaws and center (V shaped) and sides of roof of mouth, with 1-2 pairs of small canines at front of top jaw; preoperculum with large spine at upper angle, no serrations; operculum without visible spines; gill opening restricted above by fusion of operculum to body, a flap extending back from upper operculum to beyond pectoral base; 15 rakers on 1st gill arch; dorsal VII (rarely VIII), 20-24, spines low, fin base long, end of soft part rounded; anal III, 17-20, long base, end of soft part rounded; pectoral 16-17 rays, rounded; pelvic I, 5, inserted under pectoral base; tail rounded; lateral line interrupted below posterior part of soft dorsal fin, reappearing lower down on side; scales small, rough; midlateral scales 48-55.
Body brown with darker scale centres often giving the appearance of fine dark longitudinal lines on sides; may also have pale blotches on rear of body; head pale brown or tannish with 2-3 brown bands bordering an oblique whitish bar behind and below eye; a prominent black spot on opercle.
Size: attains 10 cm.
Habitat: a secretive dweller of rocky crevices.
Depth: 3-40 m?
Central Gulf of California to northern Peru, Cocos, Malpelo and Galapagos.
