Bigeye bass
Body an elongate oval, narrowing to tail base; upper and lower head profiles convex; very large eye (diameter = 12-16% of SL); mouth moderately oblique, lower jaw projecting, top jaw bone without additional bone above; a patch of granular teeth on tongue; preoperculum finely serrated on rear and lower edges; 11-13 long rakers on upper limb of first gill arch; dorsal fin X (4th-9th ~ equal and longer than 3rd), 14-15; anal III, 8; pectoral 17-19, long, reaches past origin of anal fin; pelvic fins long, but without elongate rays; tail deeply forked, with sharp tips; 36-40 lateral scales; two rows of large scales between base of dorsal fin and lateral line; head and jaws fully scaled.
Head and body pink above, silver below; a curved yellow stripe from snout to under eye, yellow blotches on operculum; a series of vertically elongate yellowish blotches along mid-side of body; fins pinkish, with small yellowish spots on upper tail lobe and on soft dorsal, yellow edges to the remaining fins.
Size: to 21 cm.
Habitat: probably aggregates over rock, sand and shell bottoms.
Depth: 80- 325 m.
SW and eastern middle Gulf of California to Panama, and Cocos.
