Grape-eye seabass
Body deep, compressed; head compressed, pointed, upper profile straight; eye large, dark; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw projecting; upper jaw bone broad, with distinct accessory bone; teeth small, simple, on jaws and top and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle serrated; 29-32 long slender gill rakers; dorsal with X, 10-11, a slight notch between spines and rays; anal with III, 9, spines at rear longest; pelvics inserted immediately behind pectoral base, reach to anus; tail fin slightly concave; lateral line complete, follows humped contour of back; scales small, rough, on all of head and jaws.
Pale greenish-grey, silvery grey below; conspicuous dark line along lateral line; fins pale; iris whitish.
Size: 50 cm.
Habitat: demersal on rocky bottoms.
Depth: 10-55 m.
Southern Colombia to central Chile, the Galapagos.
