Head deep; wide and deeply concave between eyes; snout very wide, slightly projecting snout plates; no transverse groove across top of head behind eyes; 2 spines at rear of preopercular crest; spines on sides of snout and before & under eye stout, curved; teeth on jaws and roof of mouth simple; two separate dorsal fins, X (1st spine with inner ¼ smooth to rough, next 2 spines smooth, 1st 2 spines about same length) + 10-12; anal fin with 10-11 rays; pectoral fin 13 rays, relatively short (shorter than head, only reaching about to anus), rear margin angular at top, straight to slightly concave along rear edge, 3rd-4th rays longest, 3 enlarged free rays at bottom are shorter than fin, topmost not reaching to tip of pelvic; tail slightly concave, top lobe slightly longer than bottom lobe; scales very rough on back and sides, smooth on breast, belly and nape; rear flap of operculum with scales; lateral-line scales 50-52.
Head and body olive brown above tinted with red, pale to white below; body with two faint dark bars, one under 1st dorsal, another under rear 2 of 2nd dorsal; gill cavity blackish; dorsals translucent, 1st with front tip blackish, 2nd with dark rear base, blackish margin (except tips of rays); tail fin- 1-2 irregular vertical rows of dusky spots, rear third with white rays and black membranes; anal and pelvics clear; pectoral clear, with blackish to red-brown edges and base.
Size: 40 cm.
Habitat: sand-mud bottoms.
Depth: 4-107 m.
Lower Baja California and the northern and eastern Gulf of California to Chile.
