Head deep, with steep front profile, snout concave; wide between eyes; no projecting snout plates; no transverse groove across top of head behind eyes; center of radiation of bony ridges on cheek without a spine; teeth on jaws and roof of mouth simple; two separate dorsal fins, X + 10-12; pectoral fins relatively long, reaching to middle of anal fin, 13-14 rays, with 2-3 enlarged free rays at bottom; body with rough scales; rear flap of operculum with scales; nape scaled; lateral-line scales 75-80.
Generally grey brown above, abruptly white belly, with row of orange spots along junction of those colors; a broad triangular red-brown blotch under eye; under throat orange; outer 3/4 of first dorsal fin dark; pectoral fin blackish or grey with rows of dark spots, and with blue-white margin; tail fin with dark blotches forming bars, white margin.
Size: reaches 30 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms in the vicinity of rocky reefs.
Depth: 20-30 m.
