A large, squarish, bony head that has many ridges and spines; bony plates projecting at front of snout very short; preopercular crest with 1 rear spine; narrow between eyes; mouth opens at front or slightly under snout; teeth on jaws and roof of mouth simple; two separate dorsal fins, X-XI + 10-11, 1st spine longest, front edge serrated; anal rays 11; pectoral fins short, 23-34 percent of SL, reaching origin of anal fin, 12 rays, with 2-3 enlarged, free rays at bottom; body with rough scales; rear flap of operculum without scales; nape not scaled; breast and belly scaly; 49-55 lateral line scales.
Head and upper body red-brown, body white below, central sides of body with yellow and red diagonal bars; first dorsal red, with brown dots and a large dark spot between bases of 4th and 5th spines; second dorsal red, with white base, outer edge and a short white stripe at center front; anal fin white, with red rear margin; tail white, with 2 red bars, top and bottom edges red; pectoral red, with 2 dark spots at front upper edge.
Size: 15 cm.
Habitat: sand and mud bottoms.
Depth: 20-191 m.
Southern Baja and SW and NE Gulf of California to Peru, the Revillagigedos and Cocos Island.
