Peruvian scorpionfish

Head large, depressed, spiny; deep depressions before & behind eyes; longitudinal ridge below eye with 3-4 spines; teeth on sides and center of roof of mouth; preopercle 5 spines, top one largest, one below that well developed, row of fringed flaps along margin; row of 3 spines behind eye, and 2 at upper edge of opercle; skin flaps above front of top jaw, none on lower jaw, none in body; 15-16 gill rakers; dorsal XII, 9-10; pectoral 19-21 rays, upper rays branched, lower rays unbranched, thickened; anal III, 5; scales smooth, 24 on lateral line, 49-51 vertical rows.

Body, head and fins scarlet to orange brown with red mottling & spotting; irregular red barring on fins; spiny dorsal all red.

Size: 37 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 35-100 m.

The tip of Baja California to to Peru, Cocos Island.
