Neck curved, with head at about right angle to body; dorsal fin large, its base elevated; pectorals and anal fin small; no pelvic fins; tail prehensile, curlable, without a tail fin; brood pouch on trunk.

A circumglobal tropical to temperate genus with 52 species; 3 species, 1 endemic and the others from the W Atlantic, occur in our region.
