Body oblong, compressed, elongate (depth 26-37% SL); head 30-38% of SL; snout pointed (24-42% of head length); rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; lips thin; underside of chin with 2 large pores and a central groove; preoperculum finely serrated, without spines; dorsal fin XIII (XII-XIV), spines low (13-16% SL), 4th spine longest, deeply notched; tail forked; pectoral fin short, not reaching anus or soft dorsal; anal fin III, 6-8, 2nd spine much longer than 3rd; scales over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin; soft dorsal and anal fins usually without scales.
A neotropical genus with three species; one west Atlantic species in the Greater Caribbean.
